Big brain, small world?

چکیده
8 January 2015 T HE electroencephalogram is the scalp recording of the electrical activity of the brain and reflects the activity of millions of neurons on and just below the surface of the brain. The electroencephalogram is used extensively as surrogate marker of anesthetic effect. The rhythmic pattern of the electroencephalogram is complex and while some patterns are easily recognized by the eye, such as sleep spindles during stage 2 sleep, sophisticated analyses techniques have been developed to disentangle the complexities of electroencephalographic behavior. In this issue of AnEstHEsIology, Khodayari-Rostamabad et al.1 present data on the effect of the opioid remifentanil on the electroencephalogram. They first performed a functional connectivity analysis to establish the characteristics of the cortical network and subsequently analyzed the network with a technique based on graph theory. Functional connectivity represents statistical covariation between brain regions (i.e., brain regions with similar rhythmic activity), however, without any implications regarding causality or mechanism. to construct the network, Khodayari-Rostamabad et al.1 calculated the coherence matrix of the electroencephalogram in the standard bands, assuming that the electrodes serve as nodes to the network. Apart from the electroencephalogram, other techniques, such as functional magnetic imaging, may be used to define functional brain connectivity.2

Small-world Structure in Children’s Featured Semantic Networks
Background: Knowing the development pattern of children’s language is applicable in developmental psychology. Network models of language are helpful for the identification of these patterns. Objectives: We examined the small-world properties of featured semantic networks of developing children. Materials & Methods: In this longitudinal study, the featured semantic networks of children aged 1...

Big data usually includes data sets with sizes beyond the ability of commonly used software tools to capture, curate, manage, and process data within a tolerable elapsed time. In this paper, we have discussed about the various characterstic’s of big data and how data is increasing day by day. There are various aspects of knowledge discovery that are discussed. Moreover, the small world phenomen...

Tripartite organization of the ventral stream by animacy and object size.
Occipito-temporal cortex is known to house visual object representations, but the organization of the neural activation patterns along this cortex is still being discovered. Here we found a systematic, large-scale structure in the neural responses related to the interaction between two major cognitive dimensions of object representation: animacy and real-world size. Neural responses were measur...

BIG BANG HUMAN BRAIN The universe started with the Big Bang some 13,500 million (billion) years ago. Then very recently, about 200,000 years ago, another " Big Bang " happened – Homo sapiens appeared on earth. It has many genetic similarities with other species such as the chimpanzee and, even more so, with other hominids such as the Neanderthals who lived with us until 30,000 or so years ago. ...
متن کاملMid-level perceptual features distinguish objects of different real-world sizes.
Understanding how perceptual and conceptual representations are connected is a fundamental goal of cognitive science. Here, we focus on a broad conceptual distinction that constrains how we interact with objects--real-world size. Although there appear to be clear perceptual correlates for basic-level categories (apples look like other apples, oranges look like other oranges), the perceptual cor...
